The Different Types of Solar Proofing Solutions

Solar proofing is the process of modifying a building or structure to make it more resistant to the effects of solar radiation. There are a variety of solar proofing solutions available, each with their own unique benefits and drawbacks. In this blog post we list and discuss the most used types of solar proofing solutions: reflective coatings, green roofs, insulation, window films, shade devices, solar panels and cool roofs.

Reflective Coatings

Reflective coatings are applied to the surface of a roof and reflect sunlight away from the building. This reduces the amount of heat absorbed by the building which consequently reduces the need for air conditioning. Reflecting coatings are usually white, but there are other colours available which provide a similar effect.

Green Roofs

Green roofs are covered with vegetation. Vegetation provides a layer of insulation that helps to reduce the amount of heat absorbed by the building below. Green roofs are also effective at absorbing rainwater, which can reduce the amount of wear and tear caused by stormwater runoff.

Insulation

Insulation is building material added to the walls, ceiling or roof of a building to reduce the amount of heat that is transferred between the inside and outside of a building. Insulation is regularly made from fiberglass, cellulose and foam. Recycled insulation is becoming more popular as a sustainable material.

Window Films

Window films are applied to glass windows to reduce the amount of heat that is absorbed by a building. They are usually made from a very thin layer of metal or other reflective material that reflects sunlight away from the building.

Shade Devices

Shade devices are building features that are designed to provide shade to a building or specific area of a building, for example, an area that faces the sun during its zenith. Shade devices can be made from a range of materials, including metal, fabric and wood. Shade devices are usually affixed to the outside of a building and can be either fixed or adjustable.

Solar Panels

Solar panels generate energy by absorbing the sun’s radiation and converting it to electricity. They also provide shade to the rood which can help reduce the amount of heat absorbed by the building. We discuss solar panels extensively in our blog.

Cool Roofs

Cool roofs are roofs designed to reflect more sunlight and absorb less heat than traditional roofs. They are usually made from a reflective material and can be either light or dark coloured.

All of these solar proofing solutions come with a range of limitations. Reflective coatings, window films and shade devices, for example. are easy to apply and are cost-effective, but may be inefficient compared to more expensive solutions. Green roofs provide excellent aesthetic value but are expensive to install and maintain. Insulation may require significant modifications to a building. Consulting with a solar proofing professional can help to identify the most effective and affordable solution for your needs.
